Horn of Oil

Why Are You Afraid?

-Awe-

First, a soft salt air: light and open, the sharpness of the storm already gone. Then the space widens, smooth and weightless, as everything settles into stillness.A warmth follows, quiet and diffused, like light resting on the surface of the water. It lingers there–clear, unbroken, and still; the sea itself has yielded to His voice, and the question remains.

Scripture

Matthew 8:23-27

When he got into a boat, his disciples followed him. Behold, a violent storm came up on the sea, so much that the boat was covered with the waves; but he was asleep. The disciples came to him and woke him up, saying, “Save us, Lord! We are dying!”He said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm. The men marveled, saying, “What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Reflection

You are in the boat—surrounded by wind and wave, the storm rising. The water surges.
The vessel creaks.
Fear takes hold.
He is with you—but silent, sleeping. You cry out,
“Lord, save us!”
And then—He rises. Not in panic, but with authority. He speaks. The wind stops.
The sea stills.
And suddenly—the fear changes. Not gone, but transformed.“What sort of man is this?”The waves no longer threaten, yet your heart still trembles. For now you see—the One in the boat commands all of creation.Where in your life has fear gripped you—loud, urgent, overwhelming? And when He answered… did the fear vanish, or did it deepen into something else?Did He ask you to step out—to speak, to act, to trust—in a way that still felt frightening? What might it look like for your fear
to become awe—to realize that the One you called upon is more powerful, more present, more mysterious than you had yet understood?

Stay here a moment.Let the fragrance of awe
settle gently around you.
And when you rise,
it goes with you.
